2005 National Retriever Championship Monday - November 14, 2005

Third Series

After completing the running of the first and second series Monday morning, the judges went to a land/water triple. The test consisted of two control birds and a live flyer duck. After the birds were all down, gunning stations one and two retired to holding blinds. The first bird down was directly in front of the running line and incorporated two bodies of swimming water in route to the bird. The correct line to the bird was to run over the edge of a dike, enter the water and swim approximately 60 yards, cross a spit of land, re-enter the water and swim to the opposite side of a peninsula to the bird. The bird was at a distance of approximately 155 yards. The second bird was at an angle of approximate thirty degrees to the right of this one and was thrown right to left in light cover. The correct line to the bird was through the very edge of the same body of water as to the first. After a short swim, the dogs had to land and proceed at a slight uphill angle to the bird which was in light cover and at a distance of approximately 165 yards. The final bird, even further to the right, was a flyer duck. Thrown and shot almost directly away from the running line. The bird landed in light cover. At a distance of approximately 75 yards to the gunning stations, birds were landing at distances up to 100 yards.

Winds were light and varying from directly behind the running line to angling right to left across the pond. The test as taking approximately six to eight minutes per dog.
